• Disasters and Possibly Aliens

    It’s been a while since I last made an entry, but I felt compelled to explore disasters as a theme. Events like alien invasion, earthquakes and tsunamis are recurring nightmares for me. Maybe it’s my brain’s way of trying to wake me up during episodes of sleep apnea. During these apnea events, the body experiences significant stress from not receiving enough oxygen. This stress can manifest in vivid and unpleasant dreams.

    Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any works in the public domain that depict alien invasions so I included a mysterious phenomenon in 1561 that was documented in a broadsheet.

  • The Many Lives of Cats in Art

    As someone who loves cats but doesn’t have one, I’ve put together a mini-collection of five artworks featuring them. Naturally, two of the pieces are by Louis Wain, the master of cat art, and you’ll see why. I also selected a couple of works that share some interesting stylistic elements.

  • Night Scenes

    Last week I was looking for some art in the public domain to print at a local shop. You know how it goes – one minute you’re browsing for something specific, the next an Instagram ad for an online art print seller pops up. What started as a simple search quickly turned into an art history journey, leading me to some interesting works. I put them all in a database which I’ll keep adding to and will write about here.

    From that initial dive, what really resonated with me at the time were the pieces set at night. So, in this post, I’m sharing four of those evocative works, plus a bonus at the end.
